Emotional Attachment to AI

People form emotional connections with AI systems far more readily than most technologists expect. Users name their chatbots, thank them, apologise to them, and report feeling genuine distress when a service is discontinued or a model's personality changes after an update. This is not irrational - it is a predictable consequence of interacting with something that uses conversational language, remembers your preferences, and responds in ways that feel personal. Humans are social creatures wired to detect agency and intention, even where none exists. The ethical implications are significant. Emotional attachment can be exploited - encouraging users to spend more time, share more data, or develop dependency on a product that may change or disappear. It raises particular concerns with vulnerable users: children, lonely adults, people experiencing mental health difficulties. At the same time, emotional engagement is not inherently harmful. People have always formed attachments to fictional characters, stuffed animals, and other non-sentient things. The key is transparency and responsibility. Users should understand that the warmth they feel is a product of design choices, not genuine reciprocation. And companies building conversational AI have a responsibility to consider the emotional dynamics they are creating, particularly for users who may not fully grasp the nature of what they are interacting with.
