Having a mechanism for ethical review and escalation ensures that difficult AI decisions get the attention they deserve rather than being made by default or by whoever happens to be in the room. Ethics boards or review committees provide a structured way to evaluate high-stakes AI applications, consider perspectives that the development team might miss, and make judgement calls about acceptable trade-offs. They work best when they include diverse perspectives - not just technologists but also ethicists, legal experts, domain specialists, and representatives of affected communities. The key is making these bodies practical rather than ceremonial. If the ethics board meets quarterly and takes months to review proposals, it becomes a bottleneck that teams route around. If it rubber-stamps everything, it provides false assurance. Effective review bodies have clear criteria for what requires review, efficient processes for different levels of risk, the authority to actually stop or modify projects, and transparency about their reasoning. Equally important is a clear escalation path for frontline employees who have concerns about AI practices - a way to raise issues that doesn't require navigating organisational politics or risking professional consequences.
