Training Design for AI Adoption
Rolling out AI tools without proper training is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes organisations make. People receive access to a new tool, perhaps watch a brief demo, and are then expected to figure it out. Some do. Many don't, and quietly stop using it while telling their managers everything's going well. Effective AI training goes beyond "here's how to use the interface." It builds mental models of what the AI does well and where it struggles, provides practice with realistic scenarios, addresses emotional responses (anxiety, scepticism, over-enthusiasm), and creates social support structures where people can share tips and troubleshoot together. Training also needs to be ongoing rather than one-off. AI tools update frequently, and people's needs evolve as they move from basic to more sophisticated use. The best training programmes include initial orientation, regular skill-building sessions, accessible reference materials, and communities of practice where experienced users help newer ones. They also measure actual adoption and proficiency rather than just counting how many people attended a training session.
