Internal AI Policy Design

Every organisation using AI needs clear policies, even if they're simple ones. Without policies, you get a free-for-all where individuals make their own decisions about what's appropriate - using customer data to train models, deploying chatbots that make claims the company can't stand behind, or feeding confidential information into third-party AI tools. Good AI policies are specific enough to guide real decisions but flexible enough to accommodate the range of AI applications across your organisation. They should cover acceptable use (what AI can and can't be used for), data handling (what data can be used with AI systems, particularly third-party ones), quality and testing requirements (what must be verified before deployment), transparency obligations (when and how to disclose AI use), and accountability (who is responsible for AI-related decisions and outcomes). The best policies are written in plain language, developed with input from the people who'll follow them, and updated regularly as technology and best practices evolve. Start with the highest-risk areas and expand over time, rather than trying to create a comprehensive policy for everything at once.
