Human-in-the-Loop Systems

Human-in-the-loop (HITL) means that a human is actively involved in the AI's decision-making process - reviewing outputs, providing corrections, approving actions before they're executed. It's the most common approach to keeping human oversight in AI systems, and it sounds straightforward. In practice, it's anything but. The effectiveness of HITL depends entirely on whether the human in the loop is genuinely engaging with each decision or simply rubber-stamping AI outputs to keep the workflow moving. When someone reviews their hundredth AI recommendation in a day, the quality of that review tends to drop dramatically. This is the paradox of HITL: it's designed to catch AI errors, but the conditions it creates - repetitive review of mostly correct outputs - are precisely those that make humans worst at catching errors. Making HITL work requires managing cognitive load, varying the task to maintain attention, providing clear criteria for what "good review" looks like, and being honest about the volume of decisions a single person can meaningfully oversee. Sometimes, less frequent but more thorough review is better than continuous but superficial oversight.
