Mental Models of AI

Everyone who interacts with AI has a mental model of how it works - a simplified internal picture that shapes their expectations and behaviour. Some people imagine a vast brain, reasoning its way through problems. Others picture a sophisticated search engine. Some think of it as a helpful but unreliable colleague. These mental models, whether roughly accurate or wildly wrong, determine how people use AI tools, how much they trust the outputs, and how they react when things go wrong. If your mental model is "AI is a reliable oracle," you will accept its answers uncritically. If your mental model is "AI is fancy autocomplete," you will check its work. Neither model is perfectly accurate, but the second leads to better outcomes in practice. For organisations deploying AI, understanding the mental models your users hold is crucial for designing effective interfaces and training. People who believe AI understands them will be devastated when it makes a callous error. People who understand it is generating statistically likely text will be less surprised and better prepared. The most effective AI education does not try to teach people technical details - it helps them build mental models that are accurate enough to set appropriate expectations and guide sensible behaviour.
