Third-Party Oversight & Independent Review
Internal governance is necessary but not sufficient. When organisations audit their own AI systems, there's an inherent conflict of interest - the same people who built and deployed the system are assessing whether it works properly. Third-party oversight brings independent eyes to the process. This can take several forms: independent auditors who examine systems for bias and compliance, civil society organisations that monitor AI deployments in sensitive areas, academic researchers who study real-world system behaviour, and regulatory bodies with inspection powers. The challenge is access. Meaningful independent review requires the ability to examine training data, test system outputs, and understand deployment contexts - and many organisations are reluctant to provide that level of access, citing trade secrets or security concerns. Some regulatory frameworks are starting to mandate independent audits for high-risk systems, and a growing ecosystem of AI audit firms is emerging to meet demand. For organisations deploying AI in consequential settings, proactively engaging with independent reviewers builds credibility and often catches issues that internal teams have become blind to. Waiting for a regulator to demand access is a riskier strategy than inviting scrutiny on your own terms.
