Major AI Labs & Research Institutions
A small number of organisations dominate AI research and development. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, created ChatGPT and the GPT series. Google DeepMind, formed by merging Google Brain and DeepMind, builds Gemini and conducts fundamental research. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, builds Claude and focuses on AI safety. Meta's AI research lab develops the open-source Llama models. These four, plus a handful of others - Mistral in France, xAI (Elon Musk's venture), Cohere, and various Chinese labs including Baidu, Alibaba, and DeepSeek - represent the bulk of frontier AI development. Major universities - Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Oxford, Cambridge - remain important for fundamental research but increasingly struggle to compete with industry on compute resources. The concentration of AI capability in a few well-funded labs is one of the defining features of the current moment. It means that decisions made by a relatively small group of people - about what to build, how to release it, and what safeguards to include - have outsized influence on how AI develops and who benefits from it.
