The Turing Test & Its Critics

In 1950, Alan Turing proposed a simple test for machine intelligence: if a human can't tell whether they're conversing with a person or a machine, the machine should be considered intelligent. It was an elegant idea that sidestepped the hard question of what intelligence "really" is. Modern chatbots can now pass casual versions of the Turing Test - many people genuinely can't tell they're talking to a machine in short conversations. But rather than proving machines are intelligent, this has mostly revealed the test's limitations. A system can be convincingly human-like in conversation while having no understanding of what it's saying, no ability to learn from the conversation, and no capacity to apply its apparent knowledge in the real world. Critics have proposed alternatives - tests based on physical interaction, scientific reasoning, or the ability to learn new skills - but none has gained universal acceptance. The deeper lesson is that intelligence isn't a single thing you either have or don't. It's a collection of capabilities, and current AI systems have some of them in abundance while lacking others entirely.
