Aerospace, Defence & Logistics
Aerospace, defence, and logistics are domains where AI applications carry particularly high stakes and often significant budgets. In aerospace, AI assists with aircraft design optimisation, predictive maintenance for engines and airframes, air traffic management, and autonomous flight systems for drones and uncrewed aircraft. In defence, AI applications range from intelligence analysis and surveillance to autonomous systems, cybersecurity, and decision support for military operations. The ethical dimensions of military AI - particularly autonomous weapons systems - are among the most debated topics in AI governance. In logistics, AI optimises routing, warehouse operations, demand forecasting, and fleet management. The scale of global logistics means that even small percentage improvements in efficiency translate into enormous savings and significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions. Across all three domains, the common challenge is reliability under extreme conditions. An AI system that works well 99% of the time is not good enough if the remaining 1% includes situations where failure means loss of life or critical mission failure. The standards for testing, validation, and certification in these fields are accordingly demanding.
