Public Sector AI & Government Use
Governments at every level are adopting AI - for processing benefits claims, detecting fraud, managing traffic, predicting demand for public services, and much more. The potential benefits are real: faster processing, more consistent decisions, and better resource allocation. But the risks are equally real, and the consequences of getting it wrong fall disproportionately on vulnerable populations. High-profile failures have demonstrated what can go wrong. The Dutch childcare benefits scandal, where an algorithmic system wrongly accused thousands of families of fraud, led to a government resignation. Automated benefits systems in multiple countries have wrongly denied support to eligible people. Predictive policing tools have been shown to reinforce existing biases in law enforcement. The power imbalance between government and citizen makes public sector AI particularly sensitive - if a commercial product fails, you can switch providers; if your government's AI system denies your benefits, your options are far more limited. Governments are beginning to adopt specific frameworks for public sector AI, including mandatory impact assessments, public registers, and human oversight requirements.
